our purpose

Our purpose is to reach and transform people by the power of the Gospel in biblical community.

beliefs

TRINTY: We believe there is one true God-Who exists eternally in three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. These three are equal and one God.

GOD'S SOVEREIGNTY: We believe that God is on His throne and controls everything that comes to pass.

SALVATION: We believe a person is saved by God’s grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone.

AUTHORITY OF the Bible: We believe the Bible is the Word of God and has the right to command our belief and action. We believe the Scriptures to be the inspired, inerrant, infallible, authoritative and sufficient Word of God.

PERSONAL GOD: We believe God is our heavenly Father and cares about every area of our lives.

IDENTITY IN CHRIST: We believe we are significant because we are children of God.

CHURCH: We believe the church is the Body of Christ and His primary means of accomplishing His purposes in the world today.

MAN: We believe that man is made in the image of God, yet scarred by sin and in need of a Savior.

FAMILY: We believe that the family is God’s institution and the basic building block of human society. We believe the Bible clearly teaches marriage is the permanent union of one man and one woman, a one-flesh union. We believe God has given sex as a wonderful gift to be enjoyed in marriage alone between a husband and wife. The purpose of sex in marriage is oneness, children, and pleasure.

ETERNITY: We believe Jesus is coming again to judge the world and establish the final state of things. We believe in the personal, visible return of our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men, the last judgment, and the everlasting punishment of the lost, and everlasting life for all who believe.

History

It all started when…

Good News began as a rescue station. In January of 1991, Smiley and Karen Sturgis with their four children (God would bless them with two more), moved to St. Augustine (Smiley’s hometown) to plant Good News Church. Their vision was to plant a church passionate about the gospel “Good News” and living life together in small groups.

On March 3, 1991, barely two months after the Sturgis’ parachuted into St. Augustine, Good News held her first worship service at The Riverview Club in St. Augustine Shores with 140 attendees. That evening our first small group met as well, and we have been coming together in worship and small groups ever since.

On Christmas Eve, 1999, we held our first service at our Wildwood Campus. In 2002, we added our gym to make room for our children and youth.

In 2010, Andy Hirko was selected to be our World Golf Village (WGV) campus pastor. He began the work of building a core team and finding a place to worship.  Easter Sunday, 2011, Andy, along with his wife, Kristy and daughter, Lilyana launched our first service at WGV. This took place in a tent as our current campus was not yet finished. We had 419 people attend our first service. In July, we were able to move inside into our beautiful WGV Campus.

Over the years, we have seen thousands of people, locally and globally, profess faith in Jesus Christ through the faithful witness of believers at Good News. Because of our passion and commitment to the gospel and biblical community, Good News has helped plant 36 churches across the globe. Our Global Outreach strategy is to plant gospel-preaching, self-supporting, national-led churches. We have made amazing partnerships with nationals and other churches in this church planting mission.

Good News remains a rescue station.

Good News is a Presbyterian Church (PCA: Presbyterian Church in America). PCA is an evangelical denomination, which means:

  • We believe people are lost and need to be rescued with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

  • The Bible is the Word of God (Inspired, Inerrant, Authoritative, Sufficient).

“Presbyterian,” in Greek, means “elder, spiritually mature one.” There are  nine elders on our Session (Elder Board), representing both campuses. The Session consists of nine ruling elders and three teaching elders—Andy Hirko, Dave Aucremann, and Smiley Sturgis. Teaching elders have been seminary-trained, examined, and ordained in the PCA. The ruling elders have been nominated by our congregation, trained in Leadership Training Class, examined, elected by the congregation, ordained and installed. Please see adjacent list of current ruling elders.

If you would like to contact the Elders about any matter, email elders@goodnewsloves.com.
